Kushboo began her acting career as an un accredited role of a child artist in the 1980s film Thodisi Bewafaii. Her first film was Laawaris in 1981. after tha she went on to star in over 100 films.  She has acted opposite stalwarts of Tamil  films like Rajinikanth, Kamal Haasan and Prabhu. She has also appeared in television serials like Kalki and Jackpot.
 
In addition to Tamil films, Kushboo has also worked in a number of movies in Kannada, Telugu, and Malayalam. Kushboo’s mentor in South Indian films was the Kannada actor cum director Ravichandran. She has acted in several of his movies, as for example. Ranadheera, Anjada Gandu, Shanthi Kranthi and Yugapurusha. She received much recognition and adulation from the masses who even built a temple for her in Chennai.

In 2005 Kushboo got embroiled in a widely publicized controversy when she made a bold remark in an interview for AIDS awareness, in relation to the requirement of protected sex. She claimed that it is acceptable for girls to engage in pre-marital sex but only if they took preventive measures against unwanted pregnancies and sexually transmitted diseases. She also added that educated modern-day men should not expect their wives to be virgins.  In a conservative country like India, these bold statements created quite a furor and raised a lot of hue and cry from two political parties - the Dalit Panthers of India and the Pattali Makkal Katchi. She received summons from the court, where her counsel withdrew the previously issued anticipatory bail petition. The judge expressed his consent and discharged the appeal as withdrawn.
