Jyothika Sadanah was born in Bombay in a Punjabi family
having very close ties with the film industry. She is daughter of a film
producer, Chander Sadanah and Seema Sadanah. She has two sisters both of
whom are actresses. They are Nandita (Nagma) and Radhika (Roshni). They also
have a younger brother Rahul. This Punjabi beauty first foray into acting
was through by the distinguished director, Priyadarshan, for his Hindi film
Doli Saja ke Rakhna, opposite newcomer Akshaye Khanna. The film failed to
make any impression on the box office, but her performance was recognized by
the Tamil and Telugu industry. Soon she was signed for a Tamil Film 'Vaalee'
for a cameo role alongside Ajith Kumar and Simran in 1999. This film was
hugely successful. At a later date she confessed that initially she was to
play the lead role eventually played by Simran in Vaalee but she refused it
for Doli Saja Ke Rakhna and instead opted for the brief appearance instead.
Her first Tamil movie as the lead actress was Poovellam Kaettupaar with
Surya. This film paved the way for a thriving career in Tamil films. Her
next movie with Ajith Kumar was 'Mugavaree', which was also a hit. After
that she gave the best performance as well as the biggest hit of her career
with 'Kushi' directed by SJ Suryah, who had previously directed her in
Vaalee. This movie starring Ilayathalapathy Vijay, Jyothika and Vivek ran
successfully for over 175 days. Jyothika layed the role of an egocentric
self-centered woman who was in love but her ego led to conflicts with her
lover. The story narrates the tale of two people who meet, fall in love,
start fighting over small issues and then in the end come back together.
After that, she got the opportunity to act with renowned
actor and filmmaker Kamal Haasan in 'Thenali'. Even her sister Nagma who was
a very popular Tamil actress never got a chance to act with Kamal Haasan. A
string of successful films followed, like Dum Dum Dum, Snehithiye, and so
on. However, her success began to wane with Star as she put on too much
weight and looked fat. Most of her movies released during the period of
2001-02 flopped, starting with Star, 12B, Raja, and the like.
She made a huge comeback with her first release of 2003, Dhool, starring
Vikram, Reema Sen and Vivek. It was a runaway success and propelled Jo back
to the acme of popularity. Her rocking chemistry with Vikram in Dhool and
the hugely admired songs ensured that the movie run for over 200 days. 2003
proved to be one of the ebst years in her career as it gave her big hit with
the Surya starrer Kaakha Kaakha. She played Maya, a teacher in the movie.
Her next release of 2003, Thirumalai with Vijay, was also a tremendous hit.
After that, in 2004, Perazhagan was released. She played, a double role in
the movie for the first time in her career. One of the roles was that of a
blind girl. She received the Dinakaran Best Actress award for her
mind-blowing performance. She also acted in the super-hit Manmadhan with
Silambarasanin 2004. Then after a forgettable Mayavi, came the movie that
has altered her life. Chandramukhi (2005), starring the biggest superstar of
the industry, Rajnikanth, is the biggest commercial hit of all time in Tamil
Cinema. The role that Jyothika portrayed, that of a housewife troubled by a
split personality, is the best ever role that she has ever played. Her
performance in the climax sequences in this film will be etched in the
memory of the audience for ever. will be remembered forever. She has to be
applauded because she was able to direct the limelight towards herself even
in a Rajinikanth movie.
She dated film star Surya for over 4 years and married him on 11 September
2006. After the wedding, she declared that she would quit films. However,
being a true professional actress, she promised to completing all her
pending projects that she was consign with before her marraige.
