J. Jayalalithaa the former Chief Minister of the state of Tamil Nadu and the present general secretary of All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam and the Leader of the Opposition of the Government of Tamil Nadu was a notble actress of yesteryears. Her followers hail her as Amma (mother) and Puratchi Thalaivi (Revolutionary Leader).

Jayalalitha was born to actress Sandhya. She was originally christened as Komalavalli. She debuted into films with the Kannada film Chinnada Gombe which was a resounding hit. In time, she became a very sccuessful actress of the Tamil film industry. Her success with her first Telugu film Manushulu Mamathalu hoisted her to stardom. In 1972 the Tamil Nadu government honored her with the award Kalaimamani.
Jayalalitha’ association with former movie actor and the-then chief minister of Tamil Nadu, M. G. Ramachandran, opened the doors of the world of politics for her. In 1981, she became a part of the AIADMK. Then she was nominated to the Rajya Sabha in 1994 whereby she entered the Parliamnt of Indiahowever, sfter M.G.R.’s demise one division of the party estranged her and extended their support to M.G. R.'s wife Janaki Ramachandran. She played on her image of the “wronged woman” and drew upon her immense popularity to get elected to the legislative assembly of Tamil Nadu. Later, she went on to become the Chief Minister of the state.
