Jaya Bachchan was born Jaya Bhaduri on April 9, 1948 in Jabalpur. She is the daughter of Indira Bhaduri and Taroon Kumar Bhaduri. Taroon was a writer, a journalist and a stage artist. His creativity was translated to his daughter.
While studying at the St. Joseph's Convent School in Bhopal, Jaya landed her first bit part on the big screen. Mahanagar marked Jaya's debut in film, she was fifteen. She later graduated from the Film and Television Institute of India, the country's premier school of film.
With great success appearing in films in West Bengal, Jaya appeared an obessed schoolgirl fan of a famous Indian film star in Guddi. The film was well-received and Jaya became a celebrity overnight. She continued to appear in many Hindu films.
On June 3, 1973, Jaya Bhaduri married fellow performer Amitabh Bachchan. Together the couple had a daughter, Shweta Bachchan-Nanda, who is now married to an industrialist, and a son, Abhishek Bachchan, who like his parents is also an actor. Abhishek took Bollywood by storm in 2000. Devoted to raising her children, Jaya Bachchan retired from acting to take care of her film. She came back to Bollywood in 1998 and has been acclaimed for her roles playing mothers.
Some of Jaya's more recent work includes, Hazaar Chaurasi Ki Maa, Fiza, Kal Ho Naa Ho, and Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham, a family drama in which she appeared with her husband Amitabh. She is now occasionally working in theater.
In addition to her illustrious career on screen, Jaya has also had an active political career. She is a former Member of Parliament. Jaya Bachchan was recently disqualified from that position on the charge that she held an office of profit in addition her work with Parliament.
