Ishaa Koppikar was born in Mumbai. Her father is a doctor while her mother is a banker. Ishaa finished her college studies from Ruia College in Mumbai and went on to get a degree in Biotechnology from Bombay University.
This 5’71/2” beauty with black hair and brown eyes enjoys dancing and indulging into Taekwondo. During her college days, Ishaa was exposed to the world of modeling where she ended up modeling for Ponds, Camay, Rexona, Coke, L’Oreal and Tips & Toes. In 1995 at the Miss India competiton, Ishaa won the Miss Talent crown. Today, Ishaa is the brand ambassador for Garnier Hair Care.
Contrary to the belief, Ishaa’s first film was a Tamil film, En Swasa Katre where she acted opposite Arvind Swamy who was at the peak of stardom then. This film paved way for Ishaa to enter Bollywood, where she started out doing small roles in films like Fiza and Pyar Ishq aur Mohabbat. Her song and dance sequence in the 2002 film Company, which was directed by Ram Gopal Verma, finally opened the door of Bollywood for her.
Ishaa received a Filmfare Award nomination for the Best Villian for her role in the 2003 film, Qayamat: A City Under Threat. In 2004, Ishaa acted in the Girlfriend which explored lesbian relationships and was quite controversial. While shooting for this film, Ishaa did her own stunts. In 2005, she acted in Kya Kool Hain Him and was nominated for the Best Comedy Actress along side Abhishek Bachchan, Akshay Kumar, Salman Khan and Anil Kapoor at the 2006 Screen Awards.
Today, she has outgrown doing special appearances in films which require her to do sizzling dance and song sequences. She is all set to act in meaningful and challenging roles. Her new films are Iteqaam, Krishna Cottage, Humraahi and Raakh. Ishaa believes that an actress should have a healthy mix of glamorous and character roles. She wants to be taken seriously as an actress and have at least one hit every year.
Ishaa is playing the female lead in Ram Gopal Varma’s new film Shabri which is about a woman who is set to become Mumbai’s underworld don. Her make up for the film was so convincing that the security guards and producers refused to let her enter the set since they did not recognize her.
She is not content with only acting in Bollywood. Ishaa has signed up with the international manager, Simone Sheffield at Canyon Entertainment in Hollywood with the hopes that international filmmakers will take note of acting talent and offer her roles in international films. Incidentally, Simone Sheffield is Aishwarya Rai’s international manager.
