Hema Malini’s first tryst with acting in 1964 was refuted by Tamil director Sridhar who proclaimed that she lacked the appeal of a star. But she did not give up hope and debuted in Bollywood with the 1968 film Sapnon ka Saudagar ("The Dreamseller). In this movie she was featured with the mature megastar Raj Kapoor. She soon became a big star with Dev Anand in Johnny Mera Naam (1970). She became one of the eminent actresses of the industry with a double role in Dharmendra starrer in Seeta Aur Geeta (1972) with her iconic portrayal of contrasting twins. This diva of the film industry was l;ovingly hailed as The Dream Girl of Bollywood.
Hema Malini worked in several movies and enacted a wide array of roles. She was celebrated for her glamour and her stellar classical dancing ability. Her pairing with Dharmendra was a huge success which delivered a number of hits. Whether it is drama or comedy, she had the talent to render the emotion with élan. Notable films of her career include Trishul, Joshila, Lal Patthar, Seeta Aur Geeta, Sholay, Meera and Satte Pe Satta. She set a new style trend by wearing bell-bottom pants and shirts in films like Trishul and Joshila. However, she never resorted to cheap gimmicks like wearing revealing outfits to garner attention.
In her hay days, two of the biggest stars of Bollywood, Sanjeev Kumar and Jeetendra gave her the proposal of marriage. But neither bore fruit largely due to the intervention of her mother who was very keen on her acting career. Later, she had a fairy-tale romance with the Bollywood hunk Dharmendra and became his second wife, even though he did not divorce hi first wife. Her elder daughet Esha ha now become a successful Hindi film actress.
Later she ventured into direction in 1992 with the multi-starrer Dil Aashna Hai which featured Shahrukh Khan and the late Divya Bharti. She even had a brush with television with a tele-serial called Noopur.
After a hiatus of several years, she has returned to stardom with films like Baghban opposite Amitabh Bachchan, where she enthralled the cine lovers with her poise and beauty.
