Esha Deol
is the eldest daughter of celebrated actress and dancer
Hema Malini and popular actor of yesteryears, Dharmenra. She inherited her mother’s exquisite good looks and her father’s acting talents. She has two elder step brothers, Sunny Deol and Bobby Deol, Dharmendra’s sons by his first marriage, as well as a younger sister, Ahana. She obtained a Masters Degree in Media Arts and a Bachelor Degree In Computer Technology at Oxford University. Before joining the Oxford University, she attended Jamnabai Narsee School, where she became an outstanding soccer player. She represented her school in the National level. She was also trained in Indian classical dance by her mother, a gifted dancer herself. At one point of time, she was presented with the choice of becoming a professional soccer player and opting for a career in films. Her father Dharmendra was dead against her joining the Bollywood film industry. But destiny took its course and now she is one of the most successful actresses in the industry.
At the start of her career, Esha had
refused offers to act in films like Mohabbatein and Hey Ram. Her debut film was
Boney Kapoor's Koi Mere Dil Se Poochhe opposite
Aftab
Shivdasani
. The film explores the
relationship between a mother-in-law and her daughter-in-law, a victim of
domestic violence by her husband. But there was not anything fresh about director
Vinay Shukla’s cinematic presentation. Esha displayed confidence and no
self-consciousness in front of the camera, but her acting was marred by hamming.
The film flopped. But her performance was appreciated with the Filmfare Best
Debut Award. This was followed by duds like Kucch To Hai and Kyaa Dil Ne Kahaa.
Next the romantic thriller
Chura
Liya
Hai
Tumne
with Zayed Khan was released. Despite the sleek treatment, the film failed to
live up to audience’s expectations and bombed at the box office. For quite some
time it looked like Esha lacked the prowess to live up to the distinction of
her illustrious lineage. However, her acting left a favorable impression on the
gifted director
Mani
Ratnam
who cast her in his critically acclaimed film Yuva as one of the leading ladies.
Esha was paired opposite
Ajay
Devgan
as a gregarious college girl named 'Radhika'. Other members of the cast
included
Abhishek
Bachchan
,
Vivek
Oberoi
,
Kareena
Kapoor
and
Rani
Mukherjee
. Though the
film flopped, she Esha garnered a lot of attention. Soon, she shot to fame with
her eye-catching outfits and foot-tapping dance numbers in the bike-flick
Dhoom. The film was one of the biggest hits if 2004. After that she starred in
a Karan Johar and Shahrukh Khan joint production, Kaal – a multistarrer spooky
thriller. Her next film, Boney Kapoor's No Entry became the biggest grosser of
2005. She followed this up with another hit with the action thriller Dus. Her performance
in a grey-shaded role in
Vikram
Bhatt
’s
autobiographical Ankahee, as a jealous and possessive woman in love with a
married man, won her rave reviews. Next, she is reportedly working in her
mother's directorial endeavor with Rekha and
Abhishek
Bachchan
. Her toned figure, charming dance
moves and restrained acting make her one of the most sought after artists in the
tinsel town these days.
