Diya Mirza won the title of Miss Asia Pacific in the year 2000 at the nubile age of18. Her father was a German interior designer; her mother’s name is Deepa Mirza and she is a Bengali. Her parents got divorced when Dia was only six years old, and later her father passed away when she was only nine. Her mother then got married to Ahmed Mirza and thus Dia came to be known as Ms. Mirza. She is not a staunch follower of Islam, and has faith in the Hindu deity Ganesha. She spent her childhood in a place called Khairatabad in Hyderabad, where she attended the Vidyaranya, a school upholding the doctrines of Krishnamurti. Later she joined Nasr School in Kushnuma.
Completing her board exams of the 10th standard, Diya joined a summer job in the marketing division of a computer firm. Before long, she started receiving modeling offers from brands like Emami, Lipton and the like. After that she took part in the Femina Miss India contest and won the position of third runner up. Next, she went on to win the international beauty pageant, Miss Asia Pacific.
After Dia won her title, she made her Hindi film debut with Rehnaa Hai Terre Dil Mein opposite the South Indian superstar R. Madhavan. Unfortunately the film failed to create a stir in the box office. She went on to act in a string of flops, as for example Tumsa Nahin Dekha and Deewaanapan.
Apart from acting, Dia Mirza is a talented painter as well. Her father Frank Handrich, himself a painter, instilled in her a love for painting when she was a child. Dia did not give up painting even after the death of her father and dabs in this favorite hobby whenever she has the time. Articles like easel, palette, brushes and pains are strewn in her bedroom, which she uses as a workshop. She humbly declares that she is an amateur and is still at the learning stage, when asked about her leisure pursuit. However, Dia loves to gift her creations to family members and friends.
In 2006, Diya and her fellow-actor Aamir Khan provoked the indignation of the advocates of Hindutva of the Bharatiya Janata Party when they openly articulated their support for the Narmada Bachao Andolan.
Diya Mirza has won the hearts of millions with her dancing eyes and disarming smile. A strong and determined person with a philosophical soul, Diya appreciates the value of success after having experienced so many hardships of life since childhood. She is thus all set to achieve her dreams – the source of her motivations.
