Babita joined the film industry through the efforts of his father, Shivdasani. He arranged for a screen test with veteran producer G.P. Sippy. He gave her a break in his film. She starred in 19 films in her short career. Soon she started dating Raj Kapoor's eldest son Randhir Kapoor. She acted opposite him in his directorial debut "Kal Aaj Aur Kal" which was noteworthy as the first and only film to bring together three generations of Kapoor family members. They married on November 6, 1971. Once married, Babita had to bid goodbye to acting, following the tradition of the Kapoor dynasty which prohibited the women in the family from acting in films.

Babita gave birth to two lovely daughters, Karisma Kapoor and Kareena Kapoor. Her relationship with her husband became strained and within a few years Babita walked out along with her two daughters. Eventually she shattered the tradition that had coerced her to leave the industry. Both of her daughters went on to become huge stars of the present generation. Karisma resembles her mother in many of her facial features and body language. Babita, the highly efficient backstage mom has a huge influence over the career of her two mega star daughters. Babita has powerful connections in Bollywood and uses her contacts with producers to secure plum assignments for her daughters. She escorts them on the shooting of their films and stage shows as well. Karisma is famous for being an obedient daughter, compliant to her mother's wishes. Neither of the two sisters signs a film without their mother's consent.

In March 2005, her daughter, Karisma gave birth to a baby girl, making her a grandmother. She now resides in Mumbai accompanied by her younger offspring.
