Amrita Singh, a famous bollywood actress, was born on February 9, 1958. Amrita belongs to a renowned Punjabi Sikh family. Her paternal great grandfather, Sir Sobha Singh, was a famous civil contractor who is credited of building a great part of New Delhi after World War I during which he amassed a sizeable fortune. Amrita’s great grandfather was village named Hadali which in now in Pakistan. Amrita’s father, Shivinder Singh, was in the Indian Army while her mother, Rukhsana Sultana was famous Muslim socialite who actively took part as an activist during the Emergency era in the 70s. The famous Indian writer, Khushwant Singh is Amrita’s paternal grand uncle; the younger son of Sir Sobha Singh.
Amrita made her debut in Bollywood in 1983 with the film Betaab. This was also a launching pad for Sunny Deol opposite whom Amrita starred in the movie. Amrita went on to have number of successes thereafter with Sunny in 1984, Mard and Saaheb in 1985, Chameli Ki Shaadi and Naam in 1986 and Khudgarz in 1987. Due to the box office success of her debut film with Sunny Deol, Amrita acted opposite him in number of films. She also acted opposite the superstars of that era, Amitabh Bachchan and Anil Kapoor.
In 1991, Amrita got married to Saif Ali Khan, who at the time was on the fringes of Bollywood. Saif Ali Khan is the son of the famous Indian cricketer, Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi, and actress, Sharmila Tagore. There happens to be a big age difference between Amrita and Saif, with Saif being much younger than Amrita. Around the time Amrita got married, she acted in negative roles in films like Raju Ban Gaya Gentleman in 1992 with Shahrukh Khan and Aaina in 1993 with Jackie Shroff and Juhi Chawla. Although these films very successful and it was revolutionary in Bollywood since no established actress had every acted in a negative role, Amrita still decided that she preferred being a wife and mother rather than an actress. In 1993 she dropped out completely from the acting circle.
Saif and Amrita have two children; a daughter named Sara and a son named Ibrahim. In 2001, Saif started having box office success. However, this marriage did not last. In 2004, Amrita and Saif separated. Today they are divorced and Amrita lives in Mumbai with her two children. She has returned to acting. In 2005, Amrita acted in the television serial Kavyanjali and later on she starred in the movie Kalyug.
