Amrita Rao belongs to a
well-to-do Chitrapur Saraswat Brahmin family and
was a student of psychology in Sophiya College. She was always fascinated by
acting. But she had no contacts in the film industry, so she never really
gave a career in acting any consideration. She started modeling with a
fairness cream ad and went on to promote and launch many products. However,
it was her Cadbury's Perk and Bru coffee ads that fetched her recognition.
Offers for films started pouring in, but she decided to complete her college
degree prior to taking up acting. She even turned down offers by Raj Kumar
Santoshi and continued her studies. She agreed to play a brief role in his
film "The Legend of Bhagat Singh". The filming took only five days and she
portrayed the character of Bhagat Singh's fianc. However, her debut vehicle
was a double-role in the re-incarnation film "Ab Ke Baras" by Raj Kanwar,
opposite Raj Babbar's son Arya Babbar. The film did not do well. But Amrita
rose to fame with her 2003 film Ishq Vishk opposite Shahid Kapoor. Suucess
continued with debutant director Farha Khan's blockbuster movie Main Hoon
Na. Her most recent release, Vivah, opposite Shahid Kapoor, was a universal
success despite its outdated theme and she received critical acclaim for her
performance.
