Vinod Khanna and his family migrated to Punjab, India from Pakistan after the partition during his college days as a commerce student, he was offered a role in the film Man Ka Meet by the celebrated filmmaker and actor, Sunil Dutt. His father was infuriated by his decision to take up acting as a career and threatened to disown him. Still, Vinod Khanna went ahead with the film which became a hit. His family finally came around and supported his decision. Within a week of his first film’s release, he was inundated with offers for as many as fifteen different roles. He played the negative character in Mera Gaon Mera Desh, Mere Apne and Reshma Aur Shera. Soon, his acting talent and magnetic personality fetched the roles of the protagonist. His performance in films like Parvarish, Muqaddar Ka Sikandar, Hera Pheri, Amar Akbar Anthony, Khoon Pasina, Qurbani propelled him to fame and stardom to the level of the likes of Amitabh Bachchan, Shashi Kapoor and Rajesh Khanna.
Vinod Khanna’s ascent in his film career continued progressively throughout the seventies. But at the zenith of his career, Vinod Khanna’s religious proclivity brought him into contact with Osho, the divine master. He relinquished the material comforts and became an inmate of Osho’s ashram Rajneeshpuram in Oregon , United States. However, after a few years, he returned disheartened and distraught, and rejoined the profession of acting.
His come back vehicle Insaaf was a huge hit and veterans like JP Dutta, Yash Chopra and Mukul Anand began to offer him prominent roles in their films. He starred in several movies like Batwara, Kshatriya, Suryaa, C.I.D., Rihaee, Pathar Ke Insaan, Parampara, Mahasangram, Khoon Ka Karz, Dayavan, and Police Aur Mujrim, among others.
Vinod Khanna produced a film Himalaya Putra in 1997 to get underway the acting career of his son Akhshaye Khanna, but the film proved to be a box office dud. However, by virtue of his talent, Akshaye Khanna has since established himself as a leading actor in the Hindi film industry. His brother Rahul Khanna is another famous veejay turned actor who has starred in several successful films.
In 1999, after a career spanning over thirty years and more than a hundred films, Vinod Khanna, was awarded the Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award.
A few years back, he joined the political party BJP and beat the Congress leader Sukhbans Kaur Bhinder three times from the constituency of Gurdaspur. During the erstwhile NDA government, Khanna functioned as the Union Minister of State of Tourism and Culture and after that as the Minister for Foreign Affairs.
Vinod Khanna married Geetanjali and had two sons—Akshaye and Rahul. However, later they got divorced. In 1990 he remarried and fathered two daughters, Sakshi and Shraddha, with his second wife Kavita Daftry.
