Sohail Khan hails from a family having deep bonds with the Bollywood film industry: His father, Salim Khan, is a renowned screenwriter. His step-mother is unparalleled dancer and former Bollywood actress Helen. His older brothers are actors Arbaaz Khan and Salman Khan – both famous Bollywood actors. His sister Alvira Khan is married to another Bollywood actor Atul Agnihotri.
Sohail Khan began his career as a director and his first film was Auzaar in 1997 in which he cast his Salman along with Sanjay Kapoor and Shilpa Shetty. This film did not much for his career. Next he directed both of his brothers Salman and Arbaaz in Pyaar Kiya To Darna Kya (1998). There was a huge involvement of the whole family in the making of "Pyar Kiya To Darna Kya", especially Salman. The film was declared a hit. This helped Sohail to carve out a niche for himself in Bollywood. However, crtics opined that Sohail still needed to hone jhis skills as a director. His third venture Hello Brother (2000), again starring both the brothers Salman and Arbaz along with Rani Mukherjee, silenced those critics.
By this time, several offers for acting were being shwered upon him. Even Suraj Barjatya had decided to cast him as Salman Khan’s screen brother in his blockbuster movie Hum Saath Saath Hain. However, Sohail was at the time busy with his commitments as a producer-director and had to decline the offer. The role eventually went to Saif Ali Khan. Ultimately in 2002Sohail debuted as an actor in Maine Dil Tujhko Diya of which he himself was the director. This film bombed at the box office. After that, he acted in more movies, but none were successful. He had his first hit in the comedy Maine Pyaar Kyun Kiya? that also starred Salman.
Sohail Khan, along with friend Bunty Walia is also a restaurateur. They are the partners that own India Talkies, a series of theme-restaurants endorsed by Salman, Sanjay Dutt, Govinda, Mahima Chaudhary and Karishma Kapoor.
In 2005, Sohail was caught up in a controversy for purportedly getting into a brawl with Sikander Kher, Anupam Kher's son. According to an interview, he denied the allegation.
Sohail Khan, is multi-talented yet a completely matter-of-fact person. He has nowadays come out of the shadow of being Salman Khan's younger brother and has made his mark as a producer, director, writer and actor in the Hindi film industry.

From Auzaar to "Pyar Kiya To Darna Kya" was definitely quite a jump box-office wise. There was a lot of contribution from everyone during the making of "Pyar Kiya To Darna Kya". Salman had contributed in a big way, he was imitating what Atul Agnihotri (his Brother-in-law) used to do in real life while wooing his sister Baby (Alvira Khan). The film is about a guy who likes the girl and does things to prove his love for her. At the same time, he does not care a damn about her brother.
