Shaam was a Bangalore-based model whose turning point in life was when he decided to join films while studying B.Com in college. He first appeared in a cameo role in SJ Suryah's film Kushi, but his debut was with 12B (2000) – which was also the first directorial venture of eminent cinematographer Jeeva. In this film Shaam starred along with Simran and Jyothika and it was a moderate success. Because of his chiseled body, ravishing appearance and palpable flair for acting, he was touted as the “next big thing” of Telegu films. He soon became the heartthrob of the college-goers. Unfortunately, his subsequent films like like 'Bala', 'Lesa Lesa' (2002) and 'Iyarkkai' (2003), which won the national award for best Tamil film, failed to set the box office ablaze. His recent film Manathodu Mazhaikalam did moderate business.
Shaam was also a part of Mani Ratnam's stage show, Netru, Indru, Naalai.
He once said in an interview that had he not taken up acting he would have finished MBA and taken over his family business or would have settled abroad
