His first film was "Insaaf Ka Tarazu" (1980) where he was projected as the rapist and cast opposite Zeenat Aman and Padmini Kolhapure. The film became a huge success and Raj Babbar was announced as arrived. But before he could be typecast, he did a variety of roles. He did a series of movies like "Nikaah", "Mazdoor", "Naukar Biwi Ka", "Aaj Ki Awaaz" and "Prem Gee"'. He has a large number of films with second wife Smita Patil like "Bheegi Palkein", "Mera Ghar Mere Bachche", "Shapath", "Teesra Kinara" and "Waaris". Some of his films with other heroines include "Salma", "Jhooti" and "Sansar".
