Career:

Raaj Kumar began his career as a policeman in Mumbai. He made his acting debut in 1952 with the film Rangili opposite Rehana. The film failed to create any ripple in the box office. During the initial five years of his career, it was only his grit that enabled him to struggle to get a foothold in the industry. He starred in a string of eminently forgettable films like Aabshar opposite Nimmi, Ghamand, co-starring Shyama, and Lakhon Mein Ek along with Asha Mathur. Finally, his acting capacity was recognized in Mother India in 1957. The film is now considered a classic masterpiece. In this Mehboob Khan opus, Raaj Kumar played the husband of Nargis, who loses his hands in an accident. Tormented by his inability to support his family, he leaves his home and never returns.

After Mother India, Raaj Kumar was snowed under offers for lucrative roles. He managed to carve out his own niche. In Paigham (1959), he played Dilip Kumar's elder brother and Pandhari Bai's husband – an browbeaten but subservient mill worker who becomes insurgent only when the going gets too tough to bear at the very end. He made his mark as a talented actor.

In the Shammi Kapoor-Mala Sinha starrer Ujala (1959), he enacted the role of a character having shades of grey. In the 1960s, Raaj Kumar and Meena Kumari made a sensational pair and delivered several splendid and immensely successful films (Dil Apna Aur Preet Parayi, Dil Ek Mandir, Kaajal).

Raaj Kumar was catapulted to the highest level of starom with B R Chopra's Waqt (1965). In this multi-starrer directed by Yash Chopra, Raaj Kumar hogged the limelight with his superlative dialogue delivery full of aplomb.
Heer Ranjha, Pakeezah and Lal Patthar were released within weeks of each other. Pakeezah was intended to be Kamal Amrohi's encomium to Meena Kumari. Raaj Kumar made his presence felt and held his ground especially in the scene where he takes Meena Kumari, a danseuse, before his incensed father and declares his love for her and his determination to make her his life partner.

In Lal Patthar, he played a whimsical, feudal landlord who, instigated by his covetous mistress (Hema Malini), imagines his wife (Rakhee) to be unfaithful. Raaj Kumar convincingly played a character having an insinuation of frenzied delirium. This aristocratic filmstar had the capability of stealing the scene from all of his distinguished co-stars.
His quirks have become arachaic. He wore vivid brocade garments at civic congregations. He addressed everyone as Jaani (beloved). He declined a role in Zanjeer because he felt aversion towards Prakash Mehra's face.

In the late 1970s and 1980s, Raaj Kumar's works gradually diminished. He was very selective and assented to work only in those films that presented him the central role. Veteran Prakash Mehra's desperate effort to work with Raaj Kumar produced two massive flops: Muqaddar Ka Badshah (1987) and Mohabbat Ke Dushman (1988).
Subhash Ghai showd the daring to bring together the ageing stalwarts Raaj Kumar and Dilip Kumar together in Saudagar and it was widely appreciated.

In the 1960s he married Gayatri with whom he had two children, a son named Puru Raajkumar who is now an actor in the Bollywood industry too and a daughter named Vastavikta.
In the early 90s Raaj Kumar who was noted for hi flawless rhetoric, started suffering from a throat disease that reduced his voice to a mere whisper. He died in 1996.
