Madan Puri made his acting debut with the film Ahinsa. Thence began a phenomenal 50 year long journey, spanning over 400 films. Madan Puri was noted mainly for his portrayal of the roles of the villain, but he was an excellent character artist as well. He thus played a variety of roles and could was not confined in any stereotype image. He carried the roles of dubious mobsters with lan. His character roles often depicted worn-down psychologically drained personalities.  Time and again, he has been seen in the films of the 60s and 70s as the benevolent uncle of the hero or the heroine, a strict police inspector, a disciplinarian father, or a poverty-stricken villager and in his earlier days, even as a mythological idol. He passed away in 1985 of a heart attack.
