Jasjeet Shergill arrived in Mumbai to take lessons in acting. He debuted in Gulzar’s Maachis. He put in a lot of effort, but his performance got overshadowed by the dazzling performance of his luminous co-stars Tabu and Chandrachur Singh. This film was followed by flops like "Jahan Tum Le Chalo.” With his foray into movies he changed his name to Jimmy Shergill. His career was revamped with the multi-starred blockbuster Mohabbatein from the stable of Yash Raj films. His restrained performance in a small role wrought recognition. His performance oriented roles in films like “Bas Ek Pal” has added to his popularity. He even got into experimenting with off-beat films like “Yahan”. He also likes to experiment wih his looks and broke away from his chocolate-hero image in films like “Hasil”. He has even starred in glamour-oriented roles in movies like “Silsilay”. Some of his latest roles have been in the well admired films Munnabhai M.B.B.S. and Lage Raho Munna Bhai.
Jimmy also works in Punjabi movies. His Punjabi movies include Yaaran Naal Baharan and Mannat.
Even after more than a decade in the film industry, fame and fortune has not altered the exceedingly likeable and pleasing persona of Jimmy Shergill.
Excerpt from an interview: "In '85 I had to move from Gorakhpur to Punjab after Indira Gandhi's assassination. How did I feel? Like any other human being would feel about leaving a place they had grown up in. We had a lovely farm, my childhood was spent there, all my holidays—it was an amazing feeling. Though I didn't face any problems personally since I was at a residential school in Lucknow, the local villagers were troubling us, it became very bad. When I moved out, I did feel I'm gonna miss all that. But life goes on—you have to put it behind you."
