Boman Irani is a famous theater and Bollywood actor in India. He started out his professional life as a photographer though he does not have formal training in photography. He soon diversified into theater with a small cameo in Alyque Padamsee’s play Roshni and then a double role opposite Pearl Padamsee in Family Ties, a play by Raell Padamsee, in 1996.
He went on act in several theater plays which have been hailed as successes both in India and abroad. He acted in the play by Rahul Da Cunha, I’m Not Bajirao. This play is in its sixth years and has been staged all over India and many countries abroad. He acted as Mahatma in Feroz Khan’s play Mahatma vs Gandhi. He lost 23 kgs to play Mahatma in this play. This play was a huge success in South Africa and was voted the Play of the Year by the South African media. Besides being staged in India, this play was staged in the US, UK, Hong Kong and Singapore.
Boman made his Bollywood debut in 2000 with the film Josh. However, he received recognition with his role in the hit film Munnabhai M.B.B.S. Once this film was released there was no looking back for Boman.
He was the lead actor in Ram Madhvani’s film Let’s Talk. This film premiered at the Locarno film festival. He has also done a cameo in Rahul Bose’s English film Everyone Says I’m Fine.
Boman has acted in a number of films in Bollywood since his debut in 2000. He has acted in a variety of roles from comic to serious. His comic roles include films like Main Hoon Na and Waqt: The Race Against Time and serious films are Lakshya and Being Cyrus. He went on to act in the sequel to Munnabhai M.B.B.S. which was titled Lage Raho Munna Bhai. He acted as a completely different character in this sequel which went on to be a major box office hit in 2006.
Boman does not restrict himself to theater and films. He has also done over 100 television commercials for notable brands like Fanta, Tata Indica and Krackjack biscuits. Boman has started dabbling in direction. He is on the panel of director for the production house Highlight Films. He has already made his debut in direction by directing 6 commercials.
