Akshaye Khanna is the son of Bollywood actor Vinod Khanna and was born on March 30, 1975. His mother is Geetanjali, Vinod Khanna’s first wife. He has a brother named Rahul who acts only in art films and not commercials ones. He has a step-sister.
Akshaye made his debut in Bollywood in 1997 in Himalayaputra. This was produced by his father. This film failed miserably at the box office and it was sometime before Akshaye could leave his mark on Bollywood.
In 1997, he acted in the war movie Border which was a roaring success. This film was directed by the well known director J P Dutta. Akshaye won the Filmfare Award for the Best Debut for his role in Border. This was followed by another success in 1999. He acted in Taal along with Aishwarya Rai and Anil Kapoor. For his film Dil Chahta Hai in 2001, Akshaye won the Filmfare Award for the Best Supporting Actor.
Akshaye then decided to do something different. He acted in a negative role in 2002 which won him a lot of critical acclaim and a nomination for the Best Villain. He then switched over to comedies like Hungama in 2003 and Hulchul in 2004 which were both successful.
2006 saw the release of three films. Shaadi Se Pehle and 36 China Town were released earlier in the year and did not do as well as they were anticipated to do. His multi-starrer film Salaam E Ishq: A Tribute to Love was released in Autumn has done quite well at the box office.
Although Akshaye has established himself as an extremely talented and versatile actor, he is still one of the most underrated actors in Bollywood. He has yet to deliver a major success. Being a rather reserved, he has not earned the goodwill of the media. He is extremely reserved about his private life which has added fuel to the fire. In 2001 it was rumored that he was in a relationship with his hairdresser. This was negated by Akshaye subsequently. Today Akshaye concentrates on one project at a time. Being extremely talented as an actor, he is bound to hold his own sooner or later.
