Aamir Hussain Khan was born on March 14, 1965 into an Bollywood film industry family. His father, Tahir Hussain, is a producer while his uncle Nasir Hussain is a director.
Aamir began acting when he was a child. He was eight years old when he was casted in Yaadon Ki Baraat in 1973. He also acted in small role in other films like Madhosh in 1974 and Holi 1984.
In 1988, Aamir acted in Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak opposite Juhi Chawla which launched him into instant stardom. The publicists of the film tried to portray him as a teen idol so they did not disclose to the world that Aamir was already married at that time. He was married to Reena Dutta his childhood sweetheart.
His other successful films are Dil in 1990, Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikander in 1992, Rangeela in 1995 and Raja Hindustani in 1996. He wrote the screenplay for the film Hum Hain Rahi Pyar Ke in which he acted as well. He has done play back singing for his 1998 film Ghulam.
Aamir is known to take all efforts to play his characters realistically. He is the Nicholas Cage of Bollywood. He also acts only in one film at a time so that he can devote all his attention to that particular film.
In 2001, Aamir produced his first film Lagaan: Once Upon A Time In India. He also starred in this film. Lagaan was the biggest hit of 2001 and was nominated for the Oscars for Best Foreign Language Film. His 2006 blockbuster, Rang De Basanti, has once again been nominated for the Oscars for the same category.
During the making of Lagaan it was rumored that Aamir was having an affair with Kiran Rao, the assistant director. Aamir and his wife separated and divorced thereafter. In December 2005, Aamir married Kiran. Aamir has two children from Reena; a son named Junaid and a daughter, Aaira.
Aamir had actively and publicly supported the displaced villagers in Gujarat in the Narmada Bachao Andolan. This lead to Gujarat state theaters boycotting his film Fanaa earlier this year. He has been on the receiving end from social and environmental group for endorsing Coca Cola, who have been accused in India depleting and polluting water sources around their manufacturing plants.
