What does Fresh off the Boat mean?
FOB is slang for "Fresh off the Boat". It refers to an individual that is new to a country. In the case of Indian FOBs, it refers to an Indian that has left their motherland to a new country. This term is most often used in a non-offensive way by others of the same race as a way to categorize each other. For example, Indians can identify others as a FOB to make it known that they are new to the country. Convesely, FOBs use the term ABCD (American Born and Confused Desi) to refer to Indians that were born in the United States. Having a background in a foreign country regardless of birth location, an individual is subject to being called a FOB if he/she does something that is indicative of what FOBs do from that country. For example, an Indian despite being born in the United States would be called a FOB by others from the same ethnic background if he/she uses his/her hands to eat a rice dish. Related Terms
