What makes one a good father? What are common traits for good fathers?

There are plenty of definitions for being a good father and I think a lot of it depends on the person themselves. From my observations, people tend to view their own parents in the idealistic sense.

If they had a stern father that taught them discipline and responsibilities, they would believe that the ideal father teaches their children this. If they had a father that played with them a lot, they will generally believe that a father should be the nurturing and caring type.

I did a search for my name on the Internet not too long ago and came across a girl's online blog. She wrote about how I was going to become a great father.

I only knew her for 2 hours. And I did not even remember her name the next day.

I met her at the Family Fun Center. There was a little boy about 6 years old who had a grumpy, angry father around. The Family Fun Center is not a place for that so I was playing with him a little bit. We played the Simpsons arcade game and I gave him however many quarters he needed to stay alive. It took about an hour for us to beat the game. Then I taught him how to use a rifle for the rifle shooting game. Yeah, its a bit complicated for a 6 year old but he figured it out.

I admit that I am very flattered to be told that I would make a great father. But is playing arcade games and teaching them how to shoot rifles the key to successful parenthood?

I don't think so. It depends on the kid.

If a kid is playful and has a wild imagination, you must let him foster that by taking him places and doing a lot of wild activities with him. If a kid is the quiet and studious type, take him to museums, science fairs, read him books. If your kid is out of control, then be stern with him and teach him discipline. Have him direct his energy towards sports or running.

So if you are the type of person that can easily get angry and grumpy then you must be certain to find a wife that complements you. One that can lessen your attitude, make you feel better. Play with the children when you are in a bad mood.

If you are the highly emotional type of guy, make sure you find a wife that is objective.
