Should Older Men Date Younger Women?

Hugo Schwyzer [2] gives several reasons why this is a bad idea, particularly if the woman is under 21. He mentions that the first time a young girl realizes that a older man is attracted to her leaves deep emotional wounds. He also mentions that while women of college age come to expect having older men being attracted to them, many of them find various ways to ward them off. He finds cases in which they don't troubling. He emphasizes that what younger women really need is for an older man who's not a relative to care for them as human
beings, not just physically.

One danger of older men dating younger women is that marriage is more likely to yield to divorce. A recent study showed that nearly half of marriages in which the bride is 18 or younger end in separation or divorce within 10 years, while the rate among brides 25 or older is half as great [2].

Why Younger Men Date Older Women

For the past nine years, I've been dating a woman who's eight years my senior, and for the most part we've had a wonderful relationship. Although she's too old to have kids, I don't consider this a drawback because I've never wanted kids. I'd say most of the best moments in my life have been with her. Most of the time I don't consider our age difference to be a drawback becuase we have so much in common and like to do the same things. We both love to travel and have taken a dozen or so trips together, including to Mexico, Australia, and the Far East. Since she's had more life experience than me, she's able to give me much constructive advice. She's often motherly to me, but in a nice and helpful way which I appreciate. She's also extremely attractive and looks very young for her age.
